Macalister Mazengarb is a medium-sized general law firm based in Wellington, New Zealand. Macalister Mazengarb and its predecessor firms have been providing a broad range of legal services in Wellington and throughout New Zealand since 1912.

We are based in Wellington’s central business district and we also have an office in Porirua City. While we service clients based elsewhere in New Zealand, including work originating in Auckland, the South Island and the Chatham Islands, most of our clients are based in the lower half of the North Island of New Zealand. We also act for clients who are based overseas, but do business in New Zealand. Our clients range in size and nature from Government departments, Crown entities, major financial institutions and businesses across a range of industry sectors, right through to families and individuals.

We believe that what sets us apart from our competitors is a depth and breadth of expertise and resources gained both in New Zealand and overseas, more typically found in large law firms, which is underpinned by our goal of forging a close rapport with all our clients, a characteristic usually associated with smaller firms. We have the resources to undertake complex and demanding transactions, while at the same time preserving the emphasis on partner-availability and the importance of the relationship between lawyers at all levels in our firm, and our clients. We find that this often not only makes the transactional experience itself less burdensome and ultimately more mutually rewarding, but also, due to the structure of our teams, generally results in effective cost containment.

Increasingly we are being asked to act for business clients who are headquartered in Auckland or the South Island in relation to their business activities in the lower North Island. The reasons for this are usually a mix of the benefit of our local, as well as industry-specific, knowledge, our demonstrated ability to build effective contacts with local personnel while remaining in close communication with head office executives, and lower legal costs (especially where costs are for the direct account of potentially disaffected clientele of our client).
